Pest control in Rietvallei often starts with the ground itself: termites in new and older homes, ants and spiders from surrounding veld, mice and rats displaced by building work, and mosquitoes where there's low, wet ground. Combat Pest Control serves Rietvallei from Johannesburg, with treatments for existing homes and termite pre-treatment of soil for new building work.

What Rietvallei homes have in common

The name Rietvallei, meaning reed valley, is used for more than one area in Gauteng, and we cover all of them, whether you're on the Krugersdorp side of the West Rand or nearer Pretoria. In our experience, what most of them share is newer residential development, estates and housing extensions on land that was until recently open grassland, with the low-lying, damp ground the name suggests never far away. Some properties are older houses or smallholdings that predate the new development around them.

That matters, because land that's recently been cleared and built on has a very particular set of pests. Grassland insects and rodents lose their habitat and look for new shelter. Builders leave timber, rubble and offcuts in the ground. New lawns are laid on soil that harvester termites already occupy.

Termites and new building

Subterranean termites live in the soil long before any house is there. If building rubble, formwork timber, tree roots or offcuts are buried under the slab or the garden, the colony has food right next to the house, and eventually finds its way into door frames, skirtings and built-in cupboards. That's why termite pre-treatment of the soil before the slab is poured is so worthwhile on new builds and extensions. It's the cheapest point at which to protect a building. Our termite pre-treatment for new building work page explains how it's done, and it comes with a certificate.

For existing homes we treat the soil around and under the building to stop an active colony. That work carries a 5-year guarantee with a treatment certificate. Harvester termites in new lawns are a separate problem, treated in the lawn itself; see termite control in Johannesburg for the difference.

Rodents after construction

When open ground is developed, the mice and rats that lived there move into the nearest shelter: garages, roof spaces, storerooms and builders' rubble. In new estates this often shows up as a wave of mice in the first winter. We place lockable stations outside, trap indoors, and look for the gaps new houses commonly have: unsealed pipe and cable entries, gaps around garage doors, and air vents without mesh.

Ants, spiders and crickets

Ants colonise new paving and garden beds quickly, and come into kitchens ahead of the rain. Spiders and crickets move in from the veld edge. We use ant baits that go back to the nest, and a residual barrier around foundations and doorways for crawling insects and spiders.

Mosquitoes near low ground

Where there's reedy, low-lying ground, ponds or estate water features, mosquitoes can be a summer nuisance. Stopping them breeding in your own garden matters most: empty pot saucers, clear gutters, keep pool water treated. We can treat the shaded resting spots around the house.

Signs to watch in the first few years

  • Mud tubes on the slab edge, garage walls or inside built-in cupboards
  • Winged termites emerging indoors after the first summer storms
  • Bare, cut patches in new lawn with small holes and soil heaps
  • Droppings in the garage or roof during the first winter
  • Ant nests lifting new paving or appearing in kitchen plug points

Estates and body corporates

For estates, we can set up a scheduled programme across the common areas, guardhouse, clubhouse and refuse areas, with a service record for the managing agent. Individual homeowners can then book their own treatments, and the results last longer because the common ground is under control.

What new homeowners get wrong

Assuming a brand-new house can't have termites. New builds are often more at risk in the first few years, because of buried construction timber and freshly disturbed colonies. If there was no pre-treatment, or you're not sure, an inspection is worth it. Ask your builder for the pre-treatment certificate; if they can't produce one, that tells you something.

A tip for Rietvallei

Walk around your house and look for leftover building material: timber offcuts behind the garage, a pile of formwork boards, rubble under a deck. Remove it. It's food and shelter for termites and rodents, sitting right next to your walls.

What it costs and why

Termite pre-treatment is quoted on the size of the slab and foundations. Treating an existing home for termites depends on the perimeter and the paving. General pest treatments, mice or ants in a house are smaller jobs, and estate programmes are quoted on the site and the visit schedule. A guide "from" price is shown on this page, and our pest control pricing page lays out what changes it.

Depending on which Rietvallei you're in, we also serve nearby Krugersdorp and pest control in Rietvalleirand, and every service we offer is on our pest control Johannesburg page.

Combat Pest Control is a SAPCA-registered business, also registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, led by owner Jason van Heerden and his 25 years of experience. Questions we get asked

Which Rietvallei do you cover?

All of them. The name is used for more than one area in Gauteng, and we serve each from Johannesburg with service within 24 hours.

Do new houses need termite treatment?

Ideally the soil is pre-treated before the slab is poured. If that wasn't done, a new house can still be treated afterwards, and it's worth an inspection in the first few years.

How much does a termite pre-treatment cost?

It's quoted on the size of the slab and foundations, so a small extension costs much less than a full house. Our price guide shows a starting price, and we quote from your plans.

Why do I suddenly have mice in my new house?

When open land is developed, the mice that lived there move into the nearest shelter. Sealing pipe entries, garage door gaps and vents, plus stations outside, usually solves it.

Can you service our estate's common areas?

Yes. We set up a scheduled programme for common areas with a service record for the managing agent or body corporate.

Is it safe to treat with small children in the house?

Yes, when used correctly. Children and pets should stay off treated surfaces until they're dry, and rodent bait is kept in lockable stations.

What should I ask my builder about termites?

Ask whether the soil was pre-treated for termites and for the treatment certificate. If there isn't one, have the house inspected.
