Pest control in Heidelberg covers an old town surrounded by veld and farms, so we deal with harvester and subterranean termites, rodents in homes and farm stores, flies around livestock, wood borer in old buildings and ticks on dogs. Combat Pest Control serves Heidelberg from Johannesburg, down the N3, with inspections first and treatments built around what we find.

Heidelberg's mix of old town and open country

Heidelberg is one of the older towns in southern Gauteng, with a historic centre of sandstone and brick buildings, churches and older homes, and newer suburbs, Ratanda township and farmland around it. The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve lies just to the west, a large area of grassland and ridges. And the N3 brings trucks, a business corridor and a steady flow of goods through the area.

This is drier, more open country than most of Johannesburg, with cold, frosty winters and summer thunderstorms. Grassland, open veld and farmland mean lots of termites and rodents, and older buildings mean timber that's been there a very long time.

Termites: the big one in Heidelberg

Open grassland is harvester termite country. In a dry winter, they cut grass and carry it underground, leaving bare, sandy patches dotted with small holes in lawns, sports fields and grazing. They don't damage buildings, but they can strip a lawn or a paddock quickly. Treating active holes while the termites are foraging stops the damage.

Subterranean termites are the ones that damage buildings. In Heidelberg's older homes and churches, roof timbers, floors, door frames and built-in cupboards are all at risk, especially where soil, wood or garden beds touch the walls. Signs include mud tubes, hollow-sounding timber and paint bubbling along a line. Treatment involves registered soil treatments around and under the building, or baiting where drilling isn't practical. Read more on our termite control page. Every termite treatment carries a 5-year guarantee and a treatment certificate.

Building something new?

If you're building a house, an extension or a farm building, the time to protect it against termites is before the slab goes down. A soil pre-treatment creates a treated barrier under the foundations and floor, and we issue paperwork that inspectors and banks look for.

Other pests we treat in Heidelberg

Rodents

Rats and mice from the veld and farmland move into homes, garages and farm stores in autumn and winter. On farms, feed rooms, grain stores and stables need a permanent ring of lockable bait stations, checked regularly. In town, roof rats get in at the eaves of older buildings.

Flies

Livestock, manure and food waste in summer mean flies, both on farms and around food businesses in town. We find and treat breeding areas, and our fly treatments page explains why that matters more than spraying adult flies.

Wood borer

Heidelberg's older buildings, with original pine and hardwood floors, beams and furniture, are classic wood borer territory. Small round holes and fine powder are the signs. We treat affected timber directly.

Ticks and fleas

Dogs on plots and farms pick up ticks in long grass and veld. We treat the yard and resting areas, and your vet treats the dogs at the same time.

How we work

We start with an inspection of the house or building, the roof space, outbuildings and the garden or yard. On farms, we walk the feed stores, stables and sheds. We then explain the treatment plan and what you can do to keep pests out. For shops, restaurants and businesses along the N3 corridor, we can set up scheduled monitoring with a written service record. Normal treatments don't require you to leave; keep children and pets off treated areas until they're dry.

Signs of subterranean termites in an older Heidelberg house

  • thin mud tunnels running up the foundation, the inside of a garage wall or the back of a cupboard;
  • skirting boards or door frames that sound papery or give when pressed;
  • flying termites coming out of a wall or floor after the first summer rain;
  • paint or wallpaper bubbling along a straight line, where termites are tunnelling just under the surface;
  • damp soil, a leaking tap or a garden bed piled up against the wall where the activity is worst.

If you find mud tubes, leave them alone. They show us where the termites are travelling, and breaking them just makes the colony build a new route out of sight.

A common mistake

Assuming a house treated for termites when it was built is still protected. Soil treatments wear off over the years, and paving, extensions and new garden beds break the treated zone. If your home is older and you're seeing mud tubes, it needs a new treatment.

A Heidelberg tip

Keep the lawn watered through winter if you can. Harvester termites go for dry, stressed grass, and a lawn that's kept alive through the dry months is far less attractive to them.

What it costs and why

The cost depends on what we're treating and the size of the property. Harvester termites in a typical garden are a contained job; a subterranean termite treatment for a whole house depends on the perimeter and whether we need to drill through paving. Farm rodent control depends on the number of buildings and bait stations. Travel from Johannesburg is part of the cost, so where possible we combine visits. Guide "from" prices are listed on our pest control prices page.

We also work in Ratanda and nearby Nigel, and our Johannesburg pest control page covers all our services.

Questions we get asked

How much does termite treatment cost in Heidelberg?

It depends on which termite it is and the size of the area. Harvester termites in a lawn cost far less than treating a house for subterranean termites. We quote after an inspection.

How long does a termite treatment last?

Our termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate, as long as the treated zone isn't disturbed.

Do you service farms around Heidelberg?

Yes. We set up rodent and fly control on farms, smallholdings and stables, with scheduled visits.

Can you pre-treat the soil for a new house?

Yes. We pre-treat the soil before the slab is laid and provide the paperwork inspectors and banks ask for.

Is the treatment safe for livestock?

Yes, used correctly. Bait stays in lockable stations placed away from animals, and treated areas should be kept clear until dry.

What are the signs of wood borer?

Small round exit holes in timber, with fine powdery dust underneath. Fresh, pale dust means the infestation is active.
