Pest control in Nigel ranges from mosquitoes near the Blesbokspruit wetland to rodents and grain insects on surrounding farms, plus flies, termites and cockroaches in town. Combat Pest Control covers Nigel from Johannesburg. We treat homes, shops, farm stores and industrial premises, and for stored grain we can arrange fumigation with registered fumigants when it is genuinely needed.
Nigel's setting
Nigel is an East Rand town that grew up on gold mining, south-east of Springs. It has established suburbs of family homes, a town centre, some industry and the neighbouring township of Duduza. Beyond the town, the land opens out into farmland, with maize and other crops, livestock and plots. Close by is the Blesbokspruit, whose wetland around Marievale is well known to birdwatchers.
All three parts of that picture feed different pests. The wetland and dams breed mosquitoes. Farms and grain bring rodents and stored-product insects. Older town houses bring cockroaches, termites and roof rats. And the East Rand's open grassland is full of harvester termite colonies that show up in lawns every dry winter.
The pests we treat in and around Nigel
Mosquitoes
Homes near the wetland, the spruit and the dams notice mosquitoes on summer evenings. But a lot of garden mosquitoes breed in water much closer to the house: blocked gutters, buckets, old tyres, pot saucers and unused pools. We treat the places where adult mosquitoes rest during the day and help you find and remove breeding water.
Rats and mice
Rodents follow food, and around Nigel that means grain, animal feed and harvested crops. On farms and plots they live in storerooms, silos and sheds, then move into houses as winter comes. In town they come from yards, compost and businesses. We use lockable bait stations placed and recorded around buildings, plus traps where bait isn't appropriate. Our rodent control for homes and farms page covers the approach in detail.
Grain and stored-product insects
Weevils, grain beetles and moths can ruin stored maize, feed and flour. For small amounts, cleaning out the store and discarding infested stock is often enough. Larger stores may need fumigation, which is done with registered fumigants under a sealed cover, and the area must be cleared of people until it is safe again. Our fumigation service explains how that works.
Flies
Livestock, manure and food waste breed house flies and stable flies through the warm months. Regular manure removal plus treatment of resting sites keeps them in check.
Termites
Harvester termites strip lawns and grazing in winter, while subterranean termites eat timber in older houses, outbuildings and fence posts. We confirm the species before treating.
Cockroaches
German cockroaches settle in kitchens, shops and food businesses; American cockroaches come up from drains. Gel baiting and drain treatment deal with them respectively.
Farms, plots and businesses
For farms and businesses we often set up regular monitoring: numbered stations, scheduled visits and a written record after each one. That suits food producers, shops and anyone storing grain or feed, and it makes audits much easier. On a working farm, we plan visits around livestock and harvest, and we discuss which products suit stores holding food or feed.
Homes in town and in Duduza
In Nigel's town suburbs and in Duduza, the everyday problems are the same ones found across the East Rand. German cockroaches settle in kitchens and spread between rooms that share walls. Mice move indoors as the winter nights bite. Fleas breed where dogs sleep, and bed bugs travel in second-hand furniture. Older houses have the timber door frames and roof trusses that subterranean termites look for. We treat homes with gel baits, lockable rodent stations and targeted sprays, and where a main house and backyard rooms share a yard, we do them all on one visit.
The mistake we see on farms
Putting rat poison loose in the feed store. Rats drag it into the feed, livestock and dogs can find it, and owls and other predators that eat poisoned rats can die too. Bait belongs in lockable stations, placed along the walls and recorded, so you know where every block is.
A Nigel tip
Clean out grain and feed stores completely before the new harvest goes in. Old spilt grain in corners and under pallets carries weevils and beetles straight into fresh stock, and it feeds the rats that are already waiting.
What it costs and why
A town house with cockroaches or ants is a small job. A farm with several sheds, a feed store and a house costs more because of the number of buildings and stations involved. Fumigation is priced on the volume being treated. Monitoring contracts depend on the site size and how often we visit. You can see starting prices on our pest control price guide, and we quote after looking at the property. If a few weevils in a pantry are the whole problem, we'll tell you to clear the shelf rather than book a treatment.
We also work in Springs and in Duduza next door, and across Gauteng through our Johannesburg pest control service.
Combat Pest Control, run by Jason van Heerden, has 25 years of experience and is registered with SAPCA and the Department of Agriculture under Act 36. Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost on a farm near Nigel?
It depends on the number of buildings, the size of the stores and if a one-off treatment will do or regular monitoring makes more sense. Fumigation is priced on volume. We quote after a site visit.
Do you fumigate grain stores?
Yes, where it is genuinely needed. We use registered fumigants under a sealed cover, and the area must be cleared of people and animals until it is declared safe.
We live near the wetland. Can anything be done about mosquitoes?
Yes. Some come from the wetland and dams, but many breed in standing water near the house. Clearing gutters, buckets and pot saucers makes a big difference.
Is rat bait safe around livestock?
It is when it's kept in lockable, tamper-resistant stations placed where animals can't reach. Loose bait in feed stores is dangerous and should be avoided.
Can you provide records for a food audit?
Yes. Every station is numbered and checked, and you get a written service record after each visit.
Do you really come out to Nigel?
Yes. We serve Nigel and the East Rand from Johannesburg, with service within 24 hours.
