Pest control in Impumelelo mostly means mice and rats coming in from the fields, cockroaches in kitchens and spaza shops, bed bugs in rooms and beds, fleas on dogs, and flies around bins in summer. Combat Pest Control serves Impumelelo from Johannesburg, and we start by finding where each pest comes from, so the treatment lasts.

Impumelelo and the farmland around it

Impumelelo is a township in the farming country on Gauteng's eastern side, near the small town of Devon. Most homes are freestanding houses, many government-built, often with backyard rooms or extensions added over time. Around the township is open farmland, much of it maize, with veld between the fields.

Living next to farmland has an obvious effect on pests. When the maize is harvested in autumn and the veld dries off, mice and rats lose their food and cover all at once and move into the nearest houses and stores. Summers are hot and stormy, which brings out cockroaches, flies and mosquitoes. And as in most townships, close-set houses and shared walls let pests move easily from one home to the next.

The pests that cause the most trouble

Mice and rats after the harvest

From late summer into winter, many Impumelelo households hear rodents in the roof, find droppings in the kitchen or notice bags of mealie meal chewed open. Mice squeeze through gaps the width of a pencil. Rats burrow under slabs and outbuildings. We place lockable bait stations outside, where children and pets can't reach them, use traps inside, and point out the gaps to close. Read more on our rodent treatments page.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches live in kitchens, behind stoves and fridges and inside cupboard hinges, and they're a constant problem in spaza shops and takeaways. We use gel baits placed exactly where they hide; spraying just scatters them. Big cockroaches from drains and outside toilets are treated at the source.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs travel in luggage, second-hand furniture and mattresses, and they spread between rooms in a shared house. Bites in a line, small blood spots on sheets and dark specks on the mattress seams are the signs. Treatment needs care and a follow-up visit. Our bed bug treatment page explains how to prepare a room.

Fleas and flies

Dogs carry fleas into homes, especially in summer. We treat the house and yard together, and the dogs need a vet product on the same day. Flies breed in bins, around livestock and where food waste is dumped, so keeping those areas clean and covered matters as much as any treatment.

How we treat a home in Impumelelo

We start by looking around the house, the backyard rooms and the yard. We check where food is stored, where rubbish goes, where the dogs sleep, and where rodents and insects are getting in. Then we treat, and explain what to change. If several rooms on one stand are affected, we treat them all on the same visit so pests can't just move across. Normal treatments don't require you to leave home; keep children and animals off treated surfaces until they've dried.

Food storage that keeps mice out

Mealie meal, samp, beans and sugar stored in paper or plastic bags are the first thing mice go for. Moving them into tins, drums or thick plastic containers with tight lids takes away the main food source in the house. Keep pet food sealed too, and don't leave dishes of food out overnight. When there's nothing to eat indoors, the bait outside becomes far more attractive.

Signs to look for after the harvest

  • droppings like dark rice grains in drawers, behind the stove and along the kitchen skirting;
  • chewed corners on bags of mealie meal, sugar or dog food;
  • scratching in the ceiling at night, often above the kitchen;
  • small holes gnawed through the bottom of wooden doors or plastic containers;
  • a stale, musty smell in a cupboard where mice have been nesting.

The mistake we see

Using unlabelled street poisons, often sold in small packets or decanted into cooldrink bottles. They're dangerous to children and pets, many aren't registered for household use, and they don't stop rodents getting in. Registered bait in a lockable station is safer and works better.

An Impumelelo tip

Before autumn, walk around the outside of your house and look for gaps under doors, holes around pipes and broken air vents. A door sweep and some wire mesh are cheap, and they close the main routes mice use when the harvest drives them out of the fields.

What it costs and why

The cost depends on the pest, how many rooms or buildings are on the stand, and how big the problem is. A cockroach treatment in one kitchen is a small job. Bed bugs in several rooms, or rodents across a house and outbuildings, take longer and may need a follow-up. Spaza shops can have a regular service. Guide "from" prices are on our price guide, and we confirm after an inspection. If you've seen a single mouse once, a couple of traps may be all you need.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Impumelelo?

The price is set by which pest it is, how many rooms are affected and how long it has been going on. Our price guide shows starting prices, and we confirm after seeing your home.

Why do mice come into the house in autumn?

When the maize fields are harvested and the veld dries out, mice lose food and shelter and move into houses. Sealing gaps and baiting before autumn helps.

Is rat bait safe if I have small children?

Yes, when it's in lockable stations children can't open. We never leave loose poison.

Can you treat a spaza shop?

Yes. We treat for cockroaches, rodents and flies, and can set up regular visits with a written record.

Can bed bugs spread from my backyard room to the main house?

Yes. They travel on clothes, bags and furniture, so if one room has them, check the others and treat them together.

Will we have to sleep somewhere else after the treatment?

No. You can sleep at home the same night once treated surfaces have dried.
