Pest control in Kagiso mostly deals with cockroaches in kitchens and spaza shops, rats in yards and roofs, bed bugs in rooms and beds, fleas on dogs and flies around bins. Combat Pest Control serves Kagiso from Johannesburg, and we treat where the pests are breeding, so you're not paying for the same problem twice.
Kagiso and its pests
Kagiso is a large township on the West Rand, next to Krugersdorp in Mogale City. It spreads across hilly ground, with older sections of family homes and newer extensions further out. Many stands have backyard rooms that are rented out, and spaza shops, takeaways and small businesses are part of most streets. Old mine land and open veld lie around the edges.
Close-set homes and shared walls let cockroaches and bed bugs move from one room to the next. Spaza shop stock and bins feed rats and mice. Open veld and mine land nearby hold rodents that move in when winter comes. And the West Rand's cold winters and hot, stormy summers mean pests are active in different places all year round.
Cockroaches: home and shop
German cockroaches are the most common indoor pest in Kagiso. They're small and light brown, they hide in cracks behind stoves, under fridges and in cupboard hinges, and they breed fast. In spaza shops, they live in shelving, behind fridges and in stock boxes. Spray kills the ones you see but pushes the rest deeper. We use gel baits placed where they shelter, which they carry back to the colony. Our cockroach control page explains why baiting works better than spraying. American cockroaches from drains and outside toilets in summer are treated separately, at the source.
Rats and mice
Rats nest under slabs, rubble and shacks and come out at night to feed from bins, chicken feed, dog food and shop stock. In winter they move into roofs. Mice get into kitchens and stores through tiny gaps. We use lockable bait stations outside, where children and pets can't reach the bait, and traps inside. Then we show you which holes to close.
Bed bugs in rooms and shared homes
Bed bugs are a growing problem wherever rooms are rented out and people move in and out. They travel in bags, second-hand mattresses and furniture. Signs are bites in lines, blood spots on sheets and dark specks along mattress seams. A proper treatment covers the bed, the furniture and the room, with a follow-up visit, and it works best when every connected room is treated at the same time.
Fleas and flies
Dogs bring fleas into homes, and fleas breed in carpets, bedding and the shady spots where dogs sleep. We treat the house and the yard on the same day, and your dogs need a vet treatment at the same time. Our flea treatments page has a preparation checklist. Flies breed in bins and food waste in the heat, so keeping bins closed and emptied regularly does a lot of the work.
Winter on the hills
West Rand winters are cold, and Kagiso's position on high, exposed ground makes nights bitter from May. That's when most of our rat calls come in. Rodents that spent summer in open veld, old mine land and rubble on the edges of the township head for warm roof spaces, wendy houses and the gaps under kitchen units. Fixing broken air vents, putting a door sweep on the kitchen door and setting bait stations along the back wall in April does more good than reacting in July once the scratching starts.
For spaza shop and takeaway owners
- Keep stock off the floor, on shelves or pallets, so rodents can't nest behind it.
- Check deliveries for cockroaches before unpacking them onto shelves.
- Close bins at night and keep the back of the shop clear of empty boxes.
- Have a regular treatment with a written record, which helps if a health inspector visits.
How we treat
We inspect the house, the backyard rooms, the yard and, for shops, the storeroom and the back area, to find where the pests are coming from. Once we know the source, we treat it and walk you through the fixes that stop a repeat. You don't need to move out for normal treatments. Children and pets should stay off sprayed areas until those have dried.
A mistake to avoid
Buying unlabelled street poison for rats or cockroaches. Some of it is extremely toxic and not registered for use in homes, it's often stored in cooldrink bottles or loose packets where children can find it, and it doesn't solve the problem. A registered bait in a locked station is both safer for your family and better at actually clearing the rats.
A Kagiso tip
If you rent out rooms, treat each room between tenants. It's quick, it's cheaper than treating an established infestation, and it stops one tenant's bed bugs or cockroaches becoming everyone's problem.
What it costs and why
The cost depends on the pest, the number of rooms or the size of the shop, and how bad the problem is. A kitchen cockroach treatment is a small job. Bed bugs in several rooms take longer and need a follow-up. Landlords and shop owners usually save by having everything treated in one visit. Our pest control prices page shows guide "from" prices, and we confirm after an inspection.
We also cover neighbouring Krugersdorp and the rest of the West Rand, and our Johannesburg pest control page lists everything we do.
Jason van Heerden owns Combat Pest Control and has been treating homes and businesses for 25 years. We're a SAPCA member and registered with the Department of Agriculture, we can usually be with you within 24 hours, and if a treated pest returns within three months, we come back. Phone 084 200 2700, or send a WhatsApp photo of the insect or droppings.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Kagiso?
It depends on the pest, the number of rooms and how big the problem is. Our price page shows starting prices, and we confirm after seeing the property.
Can you treat my spaza shop for cockroaches?
Yes. We use gel baits in shelving, behind fridges and in the storeroom, and can set up regular visits with a written record.
Is it safe to treat with children in the house?
Yes, used properly. Little ones simply stay out of treated rooms until surfaces have dried, and rodent bait stays in lockable stations.
What are the little bites I wake up with?
If they come in lines or clusters and you find tiny blood spots on the sheets, bed bugs are the likely cause. Send us a photo of the mattress seams and we can usually tell.
How long does a cockroach treatment last?
Gel bait keeps working for weeks, and our general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.
Do you come out to Kagiso?
Yes. We serve Kagiso and the rest of the West Rand from Johannesburg, with service within 24 hours.
