Pest control in Zwartkop focuses on harvester termites in lawns, roof rats in homes and complexes, wasps and bees in eaves and walls, and cockroaches and ants indoors. Combat Pest Control serves Zwartkop from Johannesburg, and we treat houses, townhouse complexes and estate gardens with methods suited to each.

Zwartkop and its surroundings

Zwartkop is in western Centurion, near Clubview and Hennopspark, and close to Air Force Base Zwartkop and the South African Air Force Museum. Around the golf course there are family homes with large gardens, and elsewhere there are townhouse complexes and cluster developments. The Hennops River flows through Centurion nearby, and open veld and koppies are still part of the landscape.

Centurion is a little warmer than Johannesburg, with hot summers and dry, mild winters. Big irrigated lawns, golf course greens next to private gardens and plenty of complexes with shared roofs shape the pest problems here.

The main pests

Harvester termites

Through the dry winter months, harvester termites cut grass and carry it underground, leaving bare, sandy patches with small holes and loose soil heaps. Large lawns and gardens close to open ground are the hardest hit. We treat the active holes so the workers take the product down to the colony. Subterranean termites are a separate risk to door frames, cupboards and stored timber. Our termite treatment in Johannesburg page explains how both are handled.

Roof rats

In complexes, rats move along shared roof spaces from one unit to the next. In freestanding homes, they climb trees and creepers to the eaves. The signs are scratching at night, droppings in the roof and chewed cables. We bait in lockable stations outside and trap in the roof, and for complexes we prefer to treat the whole site with the body corporate.

Wasps and bees

Paper wasps build small, grey nests under eaves, patio roofs and pergolas, and they sting when disturbed. Bee swarms move into wall cavities, roof spaces and meter boxes, especially in spring. We treat and remove wasp nests, and for bees we work with a beekeeper to remove the colony where possible. See our wasp control page for what to do in the meantime.

Cockroaches and ants

German cockroaches settle in kitchens and are treated with gel bait. American cockroaches come in from drains on hot evenings. Ant trails appear before summer storms and are baited back to the nest. In complexes with shared plumbing ducts, German cockroaches often travel between kitchens through the gaps where pipes pass through walls, so sealing those gaps after treatment helps keep a cleared unit clear.

Mosquitoes near water

Homes close to the river, golf course water features and garden ponds see more mosquitoes on summer evenings. Emptying pot plant saucers, clearing gutters and keeping pool water treated and circulating removes most of the breeding sites around a house.

Complexes and estates

Many Zwartkop homes are in complexes where a pest problem in one unit soon spreads to others. We work with managing agents and bodies corporate to treat the whole complex, including common areas, refuse rooms and gardens. Scheduled monitoring contracts include lockable bait stations and written records of every visit. That approach costs less over a year than treating units one at a time and gives better results.

How a visit works

We inspect the house, the roof space where we can get in and the garden, then explain what we have found and how we plan to treat it. Our sprays are odourless and do not stain. You can stay at home throughout, but keep children and pets off treated surfaces and lawns until they dry.

The mistake to avoid

Spraying a bee colony in a wall or meter box with insect spray. It enrages the bees, puts people and pets at risk of stings and, if the colony dies, leaves wax and honey inside the wall that attracts ants, wax moths and more bees. Call us first.

A Zwartkop tip

Check the eaves, patio roof and pergola for new wasp nests every few weeks in spring. A nest the size of a coin is a five-minute job to remove; one the size of a hand can have dozens of wasps defending it.

What it costs and why

Harvester termite treatments are priced on the size of the lawn and how many active patches there are. Rat control depends on the size of the roof and the number of stations. Wasp nest removal depends on how many nests there are and how high they sit. Complex contracts depend on the number of units and visits. Our pest control price guide shows guide "from" prices, and we quote after inspecting.

We also serve Clubview and the rest of Centurion, and our full list of services is on our Johannesburg pest control page.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Zwartkop?

It depends on the pest, the size of the property and, for complexes, the number of units. See the guide figures on our price page; we put a written quote together after the inspection.

Can you treat our whole townhouse complex?

Yes. We work with the body corporate or managing agent and can set up a scheduled contract with service records.

Bees have moved into my meter box. What now?

Keep people and pets away and do not spray them. We assess the colony and, where we can, bring in a beekeeper to relocate it rather than destroy it.

How do I know if my lawn has harvester termites?

Look for bare, sandy patches with small holes and loose soil heaps, usually in winter, sometimes with short pieces of cut grass nearby.

Is it safe to use the garden after treatment?

Yes, once the treated areas are dry. Keep children and pets off them until then.

How long does a termite treatment last?

Our termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee and come with a treatment certificate.

Can you remove a wasp nest from high eaves?

Yes. We bring the right equipment and treat and remove the nest safely.
