Pest control in Winterveld deals with a semi-rural mix: rats around chicken runs and feed, flies in summer, ticks and fleas on dogs and livestock, bed bugs and cockroaches inside homes, and scorpions in dry, rocky yards. Combat Pest Control serves Winterveld from Johannesburg and treats the whole stand, not only the rooms where you see the problem.
What Winterveld is like
Winterveld lies north-west of Pretoria, beside Mabopane and Soshanguve, in the City of Tshwane. Unlike most townships, many stands here are large, and households often keep chickens, goats, pigs or cattle, grow vegetables and have several buildings in the yard. Roads are often gravel, the area is hot in summer, and there is a lot of open veld between homes.
That space changes the pest picture. Animal feed and manure bring rats and flies. Dogs and livestock bring ticks and fleas. Open veld and rock heaps bring scorpions. Inside, homes still face the usual indoor pests, especially bed bugs and German cockroaches, which spread with furniture and people moving between homes.
Questions we hear in Winterveld
Why are there so many rats near the chickens?
Chicken feed, spilt grain, eggs and water troughs give rats everything they need. They burrow under the run, the feed store and nearby rubble, and come into the house at night. We place lockable bait stations where chickens, dogs and children cannot reach them, and advise on storing feed in sealed drums. Keeping the run floor clean of spilt feed makes a big difference.
How do we cut down the flies?
Flies breed in manure, wet bedding, rotting food and open refuse. In hot weather, the cycle from egg to adult fly takes about a week, so a pile left for two weeks can produce flies by the thousand. Clearing manure and refuse at least twice a week, and keeping bins closed, is the most important step. We treat the walls and shaded areas where flies rest around the house and animal pens.
What can we do about ticks?
Ticks wait on long grass and come home on dogs, goats and cattle. Some carry tick bite fever in people and biliary in dogs. We treat kennels, the grass around the house and places where dogs sleep, while the animals are treated on vet advice. Our tick control in Johannesburg page explains how ticks live and where to treat.
Why are we getting bitten at night?
If the bites come in rows and you find small dark spots on the mattress, it is bed bugs. They hide in mattress seams, bed bases, the joints of furniture and cracks in walls, and spread through second-hand beds and couches. We treat every bed and couch in the house at once. Our bed bug control across Johannesburg page covers what to do before the visit.
Are scorpions dangerous here?
Some are. Scorpions shelter under rocks, bricks, firewood and loose sheeting, and come out on warm nights. As a rough guide, those with thick tails and thin pincers are the more venomous kind, and a sting from one, especially on a child, needs medical attention. Moving rubble away from the house and sealing gaps under doors keeps most of them out.
How we treat a Winterveld stand
We walk the whole yard first: the house, every outside room, animal pens, feed stores and rubbish areas. Then we plan treatment around the animals, keeping baits and sprays away from feed, water and food crops. Inside the house, treatments are odourless and do not stain, and no one has to leave; keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they are dry. For creches, spaza shops and churches, we can do regular visits with a written record.
The most dangerous mistake
Using unlabelled poison bought on the street or at a taxi rank to kill rats. Often it is an illegal agricultural chemical. It kills chickens, dogs and goats, and children have died from eating it. It also leaves dead rats in walls and does nothing about why they came. If you have it at home, lock it away and stop using it.
A Winterveld tip
Move the chicken run and the feed store as far from the house as your stand allows, and keep the ground around both clear of rubble. Rats will always be drawn to the feed, but distance and open ground make it much harder for them to reach your kitchen.
What it costs and why
On a large stand, the cost depends on how many buildings and pens we treat, which pests are involved and how established the problem is. Bed bugs or cockroaches in the house alone is a smaller job. Rats across a yard with animals, or fleas and ticks across a big stand, take longer and usually need a follow-up. Look at our guide prices to see where each service starts, and we agree the cost before any work begins.
We also serve Mabopane and Soshanguve next door, and the full list of services is on our Johannesburg pest control page.
Combat Pest Control is owned by Jason van Heerden, who runs every job himself and has worked in pest control for 25 years. The business is SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, offers service within 24 hours, and gives a 3-month guarantee on general treatments. Call 084 200 2700, or send us a WhatsApp photo of the pest or the bites.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Winterveld?
It depends on how many buildings and animal areas we treat and which pests are involved. A house on its own costs less than a full yard with pens. Our price page shows guide prices and we agree the cost before starting.
Is rat bait safe around chickens and goats?
Yes, when it is inside lockable stations placed where animals cannot get to it. We never put loose bait on a stand with animals.
Can you treat ticks on my animals?
We treat the yard, kennels and sleeping areas. The animals themselves need a product from a vet or a farm supply store, used at the same time.
Do I have to throw away the bed for bed bugs?
Usually not. Most beds can be treated. We will tell you honestly if one is too damaged to save.
What do I do if a child is stung by a scorpion?
Keep the child calm and still and get medical help, especially if the scorpion had a thick tail. Take a photo of the scorpion if you safely can.
How soon will the flies go down?
Treatment knocks down resting flies quickly, but numbers stay low only if manure and refuse are cleared regularly.
What should I do before you come?
Pen the animals, tie up dogs, strip the beds if we are treating bed bugs and clear the kitchen cupboards.
