Pest control in Benoni, from the lakes to the plots

Lakes and pans, older suburbs, fast-growing estates and smallholdings to the north: Benoni has a bit of everything, and its pests follow the water.

Pest control in Benoni is shaped by water and growth: mosquitoes and midges near the lakes and pans, rats along shorelines and stormwater channels, termites in older homes and new estates, and ants, wasps and cockroaches in the busy summer months. Combat Pest Control serves Benoni from Johannesburg, and every job begins with finding where the pests are breeding.

Why Benoni is different

Benoni is often called the city of lakes, and with good reason. The town is dotted with lakes, dams and pans, many of them close to homes in suburbs like Lakefield, Rynfield and Farrarmere. Northmead and the older central suburbs have established brick homes and mature trees. Newer security estates and townhouse developments have spread across what used to be open land, and to the north there are still agricultural holdings with horses, poultry and big gardens. Townships including Daveyton, Etwatwa, Actonville and Wattville add dense housing and busy shops.

Water is the thread that runs through it all. Still water breeds mosquitoes and midges in summer. Reed beds and lake edges shelter rats. And deep, moist soil around the pans keeps termite colonies active even in winter.

Benoni's main pests

Mosquitoes and midges

Homes near the lakes and pans see swarms of midges on summer evenings and mosquitoes that bite through the night. Some breeding happens in the lakes themselves, which no one can treat, but a surprising amount comes from water on your own property: blocked gutters, pot-plant saucers, pool covers holding rain and birdbaths. We find and treat breeding spots and apply residual treatment to the shady places where adult mosquitoes rest. See our mosquito control service for details.

Rats

Brown rats burrow along lake edges, stormwater channels and compost heaps, while roof rats climb into ceilings from trees in the older suburbs. Lockable bait stations, traps and sealing entry points are the answer, not loose poison.

Termites

Subterranean termites attack timber in older homes, and new estates aren't safe either: buried building rubble and offcuts feed colonies that later find the house. If you're building in Benoni, a termite treatment of the soil before the slab is poured is far cheaper than treating later. Our termite pre-treatment for new builds page explains how it works.

Ants and cockroaches

Ants pour in along paving before storms; baiting them at the nest works where spraying doesn't. German cockroaches are a kitchen and complex problem all year, and American cockroaches come up from drains after heavy rain.

Wasps

Paper wasps nest under eaves, boat covers and lapa roofs, which matters a lot in homes where people spend summer outside by the water.

When each pest peaks

Flying termites and ants mark the start of the rainy season in October. Mosquitoes and midges build through December and January, when the lakes are warm and full. Wasps are at their worst in late summer, when nests are biggest. From May, rats move from lake edges and gardens into roofs and garages. Harvester termites strip lawns through the dry winter, and that's also a good time to have older timber checked before the next swarm season.

Smallholdings to the north

On Benoni's plots the priorities change. Feed rooms and chicken coops draw rats and mice, stables and kennels breed flies, and ticks are picked up in long grass. We place bait stations where animals can't reach them, keep products away from water troughs and feed, and plan visits around the animals.

How we work in Benoni

We inspect the house, the roof space, the garden and any water features or outbuildings. Treatments are odourless and non-staining, and nobody needs to leave home; keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry.

Combat Pest Control is SAPCA registered, registered with the Department of Agriculture and has 25 years of experience. The owner, Jason van Heerden, runs the business hands-on. Bookings get service within 24 hours, and anything we treat under a general treatment is covered for 3 months: if it returns in that window, we come back.

Something people often get wrong

Blaming the lake for every mosquito. Lakeside homes do get more, but the mosquitoes biting you at night are often breeding within a few metres of your bedroom, in a gutter, a drain or a forgotten bucket. Tip out standing water once a week in summer and the difference is real.

A Benoni tip

If your property borders a lake or pan, keep a mown strip between the water's edge and your garden, and don't let reeds or long grass grow up against your boundary wall. That strip takes away cover for rats and resting spots for mosquitoes.

What it costs and why

Price depends on the pest, the size of the property and how much of it needs treating. Ants or cockroaches in a townhouse is a modest job. Mosquito work depends on the size of the garden and the number of breeding spots. Termite treatment of an existing home costs more than a pre-treatment on a new slab, which is one more reason to plan ahead when building. Each page shows a guide "from" price, and our Johannesburg pest control prices page explains the cost factors.

Benoni sits between Boksburg and Brakpan, and our all-round pest control in Johannesburg page lists everything else we treat.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Benoni?

Cost is set by the pest, the size of the home and garden, and how many breeding or nesting spots there are. We give a guide upfront and confirm after inspecting.

Can you get rid of the midges from the lake?

Not from the lake itself, but we can cut the numbers resting around your home and treat any breeding water on your property, which makes evenings far more comfortable.

Should I have my new build in Benoni pre-treated for termites?

Yes. Treating the soil before the slab is poured is the cheapest, most effective protection, and it's far easier than treating under a finished house.

Do you work on smallholdings in Benoni?

Yes. We treat feed rooms, coops, stables and homes on plots, using bait stations animals can't reach.

How long does a mosquito treatment last?

Residual treatments keep working for several weeks, longer if you keep removing standing water. Heavy summer rain may mean a repeat during peak season.

Is it safe to swim after you've treated the garden?

Yes. We keep products away from the pool, and the garden is fine to use once treated areas have dried.

Do I need to be home during the treatment?

It helps if someone is there for the inspection so we can see where you've noticed activity, but you don't need to stay away.
