Pest control in Bapsfontein is smallholding pest control: rats and mice in feed stores and chicken houses, flies around stables and manure, ticks on dogs and livestock, termites in the veld and lawns, and wasps and scorpions around sheds. Combat Pest Control serves Bapsfontein from Johannesburg, and we plan treatments around animals, water and feed.
Plot country between Benoni and Pretoria
Bapsfontein is a rural area of agricultural holdings in the north of Ekurhuleni, between Benoni, Kempton Park and the eastern side of Pretoria. Most people live on plots of a few hectares: a farmhouse or family home, a borehole, outbuildings, perhaps stables or a few paddocks, poultry, dogs and a vegetable garden. Some plots run small businesses, from nurseries to kennels, and there's plenty of open grassland in between.
That way of living is great for families and terrible for keeping pests out. Animal feed is the biggest attraction for rodents. Manure and wet bedding breed flies. Grassland holds termites, ticks and scorpions. And outbuildings that are opened once a week are perfect for wasps, spiders and rats.
What matters most on a Bapsfontein plot
Rats and mice in feed and poultry areas
Rodents go wherever the grain, pellets and chicken feed are. They contaminate feed, chew bags and wiring, and can carry disease to people and animals. On a plot, bait placement matters more than anywhere: lockable stations fixed in position so dogs, cats, poultry and wild birds can't reach the bait, traps inside the feed room, and changes to storage so food isn't left open. Our rat and mouse control service explains the safe-baiting approach.
Flies around stables, kennels and coops
House flies and stable flies breed in manure, wet straw and spilled feed. They're worst from November to March. Treatment works best alongside a cleaning routine: moving manure away from the house, keeping bedding dry and covering feed. We use targeted residual treatments on resting surfaces and can advise on traps. See fly control for homes and farms for more.
Ticks
Dogs, horses and cattle pick up ticks in long grass, and ticks then drop off and breed in kennels, stable walls and the sheltered spots where animals rest. We treat those resting areas and outbuildings, while your vet looks after the animals themselves.
Termites
Harvester termites can strip grazing and lawns in a dry winter, and subterranean termites attack timber in older farmhouses, fence posts and sheds. Termite mounds in the veld are normal; activity near or under buildings is what needs treating.
Wasps, bees and scorpions
Paper wasps nest under stable eaves and in sheds. Bee swarms settle in old trees, hollow walls and unused hives, and we refer them to a beekeeper where possible. Scorpions shelter in wood piles, stacked bricks and under feed bins.
Seasons on the plots
Rodent pressure climbs from autumn, when the veld dries out and grain and feed become the easiest meal around. Summer rain brings flies, mosquitoes from troughs and standing water, and flying termites. Ticks are busiest in the warm, wet months when the grass is long. Harvester termites do most of their damage in the dry winter. A plot that's checked at the turn of each season rarely ends up with a crisis.
Working around animals and water
Every plot is different, so we inspect first and plan where each product goes. We keep treatments away from boreholes, water troughs, feed and vegetable gardens, and we tell you exactly where animals must be kept out, and for how long. Insect treatments are odourless and non-staining, and you don't need to leave the house.
Jason van Heerden, who owns and runs Combat Pest Control, has 25 years of experience, much of it on properties with animals. The business is SAPCA registered and holds Department of Agriculture registration under Act 36 of 1947, so every product we use on your plot is registered for that purpose. Service is within 24 hours, and if a treated pest returns within 3 months, so do we, at no extra charge.
What people get wrong on plots
Putting rat poison loose in the feed room. On a farm, loose bait is picked up by dogs, poultry and owls, and dead rats are eaten by other animals. It also does nothing about the reason rats are there. Locked stations, sealed feed bins and a tidy feed room fix the problem without poisoning anything else.
A Bapsfontein tip
Store feed in steel or thick plastic drums with tight lids, raised off the floor on a pallet, and sweep up spilled feed every day. Rats can't live on what they can't reach, and that one change usually halves a plot's rodent problem.
What it costs and why
On a smallholding, the price depends on the number of buildings, the area to be treated, the type of pest and how often we need to come back. Treating a house for ants or cockroaches is a modest job. A full rodent programme around stables, feed rooms and coops costs more because it covers several buildings and needs follow-up visits. Regular monitoring often works out cheaper than repeated emergency callouts. Each page shows a guide "from" price, and our price guide for Gauteng explains how plots are priced.

Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost on a smallholding?
It depends on how many buildings need treating and which pests are involved. A house treatment is modest; a rodent programme across stables, coops and feed rooms costs more. We quote after walking the plot.
Is rat bait safe around my chickens and dogs?
Yes, when it's in lockable, fixed stations placed where animals can't reach them. We never put loose bait out on a plot.
Can you treat stables without harming the horses?
Yes. We plan where every product goes, keep it away from water and feed, and tell you how long to keep the horses out.
How do I cut down flies around the stables?
Move manure well away from the house and stables, keep bedding dry and cover feed. Treatment works much better on top of that routine.
Do you come out as far as Bapsfontein?
Yes. We serve Bapsfontein and the surrounding plots from Johannesburg, with service within 24 hours.
What do I do about a bee swarm on my plot?
Keep your distance and call us. Where possible we refer swarms to a beekeeper so the bees can be moved rather than killed.
Can you set up regular visits for a plot business?
Yes. Kennels, nurseries and other plot businesses can have scheduled monitoring with a record of each visit.
