Pest control in KwaThema deals mostly with rats around homes and bin areas, German cockroaches in kitchens, bed bugs in bedrooms and backyard rooms, fleas carried by dogs, and mosquitoes near the wetlands in summer. Combat Pest Control serves KwaThema from Johannesburg and treats each property with its neighbours and surroundings in mind.
About KwaThema
KwaThema is a township south-west of Springs on the East Rand, in Ekurhuleni, close to Tsakane and Duduza. It has older family homes, newer houses, backyard rooms, informal settlements on the edges and a lively mix of spaza shops, taverns, salons and food sellers. The East Rand here is flat, low-lying ground with pans, vleis and wetlands, and the old mining and industrial land of Springs is nearby.
The wetlands and pans matter for pests. Standing water breeds mosquitoes in the warm months, and long grass and reeds around vleis shelter rats. Dense housing with shared walls lets cockroaches and bed bugs move between rooms and homes. Where rubbish piles up, rats and flies follow quickly.
Pests we treat in KwaThema
Rats
Brown rats burrow under slabs, along walls and under outside rooms, and they feed at bins and dumping spots. You'll see burrows near walls, droppings, chewed food and greasy marks along the bottom of walls. We place lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations so the bait can't be reached by children or pets, and close up the gaps rats are using. See our rat treatments for the full process.
German cockroaches
These small brown cockroaches live behind fridges, inside stoves and in cupboard hinges. They arrive in boxes, secondhand furniture and appliances, then spread through shared walls. Gel baits in hiding places, plus a follow-up, clear them properly.
Bed bugs
Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed bases and cracks near the bed. Itchy bites in lines and small blood spots on sheets are the signs. The bed, base and surrounding cracks all have to be treated, usually twice, to catch the eggs. Our bed bug control service explains how to prepare.
Mosquitoes
Homes near the vleis and pans feel mosquitoes most from November to March. Getting rid of standing water in buckets, tyres and blocked gutters makes the biggest difference; we can treat resting areas around the home where it helps.
Fleas
Dogs bring fleas home, and fleas breed in dusty, shady soil and bedding. Treating the house and yard while the dog is treated too breaks the cycle.
How to tell what you've got
Rats leave burrows about the width of a fist next to walls and slabs, dark droppings the size of a rice grain or larger, and smears along the bottom of walls where they run. German cockroaches show up as tiny black specks and empty egg cases in cupboard corners. Bed bugs leave rusty spots on mattress seams and a sweetish smell when there are many of them. Flea bites are mostly around the ankles and lower legs. Mosquito bites appear overnight, often on arms and faces left uncovered. If you're unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you before we come out.
Spaza shops and small food businesses
Shops and food sellers have the most to lose from rats and cockroaches. We can do regular visits with bait stations outside and gel baits inside, safe to use around food areas, with a written service record for each visit.
What people often get wrong
Many households use cheap street poison or strong sprays bought at the taxi rank. The poison is risky for children and pets and rats often die in walls; the sprays scatter cockroaches and bed bugs into neighbouring rooms. Registered products used in the right place work better and are much safer.
A KwaThema tip
Once a week, tip out any water standing in buckets, old tyres, pot plant saucers and blocked gutters. In a low-lying area near wetlands, that simple habit cuts mosquito numbers around your home more than any spray.
How a visit works
We inspect the kitchen, bedrooms, backyard rooms and yard, tell you what we found, and treat. You don't need to move out for normal treatments; keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. Treating the main house and backyard rooms on the same day stops pests from hiding in one while the other is done.
What it costs and why
The cost depends on the pest, how many rooms or buildings are involved, and how many visits it takes. Cockroaches in one kitchen is a quick job; bed bugs in several rooms take longer and need a second visit. Rodent control depends on the number of stations. Treating several properties that share walls at the same time can save money overall. A guide "from" price is shown on this page, and our pest treatment prices list the rest.
We also work in neighbouring Tsakane and in Springs itself, and our pest control in Johannesburg page has the full list of services.
Combat Pest Control is run by Jason van Heerden, its owner, who has 25 years of pest control behind him. We hold SAPCA registration and Department of Agriculture registration, can be there within 24 hours, and offer a 3-month guarantee on general treatments. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp us a photo and we'll tell you what it is.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in KwaThema?
The price is set by the pest, the number of rooms or buildings and how many visits are needed. The guide price on this page shows where it starts, and we confirm after seeing the property.
Can you get rid of mosquitoes near the vlei?
We can reduce them around your home by treating resting areas, but removing standing water is the most important step, and we'll show you where to look.
Will bed bugs come back after treatment?
Not if all beds and furniture in the affected rooms are treated and the second visit is done. They come back when one room is missed.
Is it safe to treat with a baby in the house?
Yes, when used correctly. Keep the baby away from treated surfaces until they're dry, and rodent bait stays inside locked stations.
Do you service spaza shops?
Yes. We do once-off treatments and regular visits with a written service record.
How do I prepare for a cockroach treatment?
Empty the cupboards under the sink and around the stove, wipe up grease and don't spray in the days before we come, because spray stops cockroaches eating the bait.
