Pest control in Doornkloof, Centurion

Doornkloof sits where Centurion meets open land, with estates, plots and new building going up beside the veld. That edge is where termites, rats and scorpions do best.

Pest control in Doornkloof deals with the pests of the urban edge: termites in new builds and lawns, rats from open land and plots, scorpions in rockeries and rubble, and ticks and fleas on dogs. Combat Pest Control comes out to Doornkloof from Johannesburg, inspects the property and its boundary, and treats where the pests are coming from.

Where town meets veld

Doornkloof is on the eastern side of Centurion, next to Irene, and it's known as the historic farm of Jan Smuts, whose home is now the Smuts House Museum. Today the area is a mix: security estates and newer homes, smallholdings and plots, and patches of grassland and open veld between them. New building has been steady, so it's common to have a brand-new house with open land just over the wall.

That edge is important. Open land and plots hold harvester termites, rodents, scorpions and ticks, and new estates give them fresh foundations, buried building rubble and young gardens to move into.

The pests that matter in Doornkloof

Termites in new and existing homes

Subterranean termites live in the soil and travel through mud tubes to timber, and grassland is full of them. When an estate is built on former veld, the colonies don't disappear; they find door frames, skirting boards, built-in cupboards and stored cardboard. Buried offcuts and rubble left during construction feed them too. Harvester termites, meanwhile, strip new lawns in dry winters.

Building or extending? Pre-treat first

If you're building in Doornkloof, the cheapest time to protect the house is before the slab is cast. A soil pre-treatment under the foundations and floor creates a treated barrier, and we issue the paperwork that banks and building inspectors often ask for. Our termite pre-treatment for new builds page explains the process, and the same applies to an extension, which otherwise acts as a bridge into the old house.

Rats from open land and plots

Rats live in long grass, feed rooms and rubble on nearby plots, and move into gardens, garages and roofs once the nights get cold. We use lockable bait stations along the boundary and traps indoors, then show you the gaps.

Scorpions

Scorpions shelter under rocks, paving, building rubble and wood piles, and new stands cleared from veld often have plenty of each. They come inside at night through gaps under doors. We treat the hiding places and perimeter, and our scorpion control page has more on keeping them out.

Ticks and fleas

Dogs walking on open land pick up ticks, and fleas build up in kennels and shady lawns. Treating the yard while your vet treats the animals breaks the cycle.

Plots and stables

The smallholdings around Doornkloof bring their own list: mice in feed rooms and tack rooms, flies around horses and chickens, and wasps under stable eaves. On a plot we cover the outbuildings as well as the house, with bait kept inside locked stations where horses, dogs and poultry can't reach it, and we can visit on a schedule that suits the property.

Signs to watch for

  • Mud tubes on foundation walls, in the garage or inside cupboards
  • Flying termites coming out indoors after the first summer storms
  • Bare lawn patches with small holes in winter
  • Droppings or gnaw marks in the garage or roof
  • Scorpions found inside, especially in bathrooms and along skirtings

How we work

We inspect the house, garden and the boundary that faces the open land, because that's where most activity comes from. Insect treatments are odourless and won't mark walls or floors, and you can carry on at home while we work; children and pets just need to wait until treated surfaces are dry. Estates can arrange regular treatment of common areas and boundaries with records for the HOA.

The mistake new homeowners make

Assuming a new house can't have termites. If the soil wasn't pre-treated, or the treated zone was broken by paving and landscaping later, termites can be in the timber within a few years. Ask your builder for the pre-treatment certificate, and if there isn't one, have the house checked.

A Doornkloof tip

After building, clear away every bit of buried rubble, timber offcuts and old formwork from the garden before you landscape. It feels like a big job, but those buried scraps are exactly what feeds a termite colony right next to your foundations.

What it costs and why

Termite pre-treatment is priced on the slab area. Termite treatment of an existing house depends on the perimeter, whether we need to drill through paving and how much timber is affected. General insect and scorpion treatments are modest jobs for a normal home, and rodents depend on how many stations are needed. You'll see a guide "from" price on this page, and our price list has more detail.

We also work in Irene and across Centurion, and the full range is on our Johannesburg pest control page.

Questions we get asked

How much does a termite pre-treatment cost in Doornkloof?

It's priced mainly on the area of the slab being treated. Give us the plans or the size of the footprint and we'll quote. The guide price on this page shows where termite work starts.

Do I need a termite certificate for my new house?

Banks and building inspectors often ask for proof that the soil was pre-treated. We issue the paperwork for every pre-treatment we do.

Can a brand-new house get termites?

Yes. If the soil wasn't pre-treated, or the treated zone was broken by later paving or landscaping, termites can reach the timber within a few years.

Why are there so many scorpions on new stands?

Clearing veld disturbs them, and rubble, rocks and paving left on site give them perfect shelter. Clearing that material and treating the perimeter helps a lot.

Do I need to leave the house during treatment?

No. For normal insect and termite treatments you can stay. Just keep children and pets away from treated areas until they're dry.

Do you service estate common areas?

Yes. We can treat boundaries, refuse areas and common facilities on a schedule, with a written record for the HOA.
