Pest control in Pretoria North

North of the Magaliesberg ridge it's warmer, the gardens are big and the blocks of flats are old. That mix shapes which pests turn up in Pretoria North and how we treat them.

For pest control in Pretoria North, the jobs we're called for most are cockroaches in flats and older houses, roof rats, termites in lawns and timber, ants, and wasp nests under eaves in summer. Combat Pest Control covers Pretoria North from Johannesburg. We inspect, find what's feeding and sheltering the pest, treat it properly and leave you with a plan to keep it out.

Pretoria North and its pest pressures

Pretoria North lies on the far side of the Magaliesberg ridge from the city centre, reached through the poort near Wonderboom. It grew as a largely Afrikaans residential town with its own shopping streets, schools and churches, and today it's a mix of freestanding family houses, older walk-up blocks of flats, townhouse complexes and a busy commercial strip. The Apies River runs through the broader area to the east, and the ridge itself is rocky, bushy veld.

Being on the northern, lower side of the ridge, the area is warm. Long hot summers and mild winters suit insects, and that shows in our call-outs: more cockroaches, more wasps, and termite activity that barely pauses. Rocky ground near the ridge also brings scorpions and spiders into garages and outbuildings.

Flats and complexes

The older blocks of flats are where cockroaches give us the most work. German cockroaches move between units through shared plumbing ducts, electrical risers and the gaps around pipes under sinks, so treating one flat often only moves them next door. Where we can, we work with the managing agent or body corporate to treat a whole block, or at least every unit on a shared duct. Refuse rooms and bin areas get attention too, because that's where rats and the larger American cockroaches feed. Our cockroach control service explains why gel bait beats spraying in flats.

Family houses and gardens

Termites

Big, established gardens with lawns and old trees mean harvester termites in the grass and, less often but more seriously, subterranean termites working up into door frames, built-in cupboards and roof timbers. We confirm which type you have before treating. Structural termite treatments come with a 5-year guarantee and a certificate.

Rats and mice

Roof rats climb trees and vines to reach the eaves; mice come in under doors and through gaps where pipes enter the wall. Lockable bait stations outside and traps inside, followed by sealing the entry points, is the approach that works. Our page on getting rid of rats around Gauteng has more on the signs.

Wasps and bees

Paper wasps build under eaves, carports and pergolas from spring onwards and get defensive by mid-summer. We remove the nests safely. Bee swarms are a different matter: where possible we refer them to, or work with, a beekeeper so the bees are moved rather than killed.

Shops and food businesses

Restaurants, takeaways, bakeries and small grocers along the commercial strip need more than an occasional spray. We set up scheduled monitoring with lockable rodent stations, cockroach control in kitchens and storerooms, and a written service record after every visit, which is what an environmental health inspector expects to see.

Signs worth calling about

  • Cockroaches out in the open during the day, which usually means the hiding places are full
  • Droppings in the pantry or along the top of kitchen cupboards
  • Thin mud tunnels on a wall, a step or the inside of a cupboard
  • Winged insects coming out of the floor or a door frame after the first summer rain
  • Wasps flying in and out of the same spot under the roof
  • Scorpions or large spiders in the garage, more than once

What people get wrong

A very common one in flats: setting off a fogger or "bomb". It fills the room with insecticide, kills the cockroaches it touches, and drives the rest into wall voids and the neighbour's kitchen. A few weeks later they're back, and now they avoid treated surfaces. Targeted gel baiting, with the whole building treated where possible, is slower to set up and far better at finishing the job.

A tip for Pretoria North

Check your roof eaves in early spring, before the heat starts. A paper wasp nest the size of a coin in September is easy to deal with; the same nest in January can have dozens of wasps on it. The same check will show you any gaps a rat could use.

What it costs and why

Cost depends on what we're treating, how big the property is and how many units are involved. A single flat with cockroaches is a small job; a whole block costs more but works out cheaper per unit and lasts far longer. Rats need stations and a follow-up, and termites need soil treatment, which is the biggest job of all. You'll see a guide "from" price on this page, and the prices page for our treatments sets out what changes it. We quote properly once we've looked.

We also look after nearby Wonderboom and pest control in Sinoville, and the full list of what we do is on our pest control in Johannesburg page.

Questions we get asked

Can you treat my whole block of flats in Pretoria North?

Yes, and it's the best way to deal with cockroaches in flats. We work with the body corporate or managing agent and schedule units so residents know when we're coming.

What does pest control cost for a flat?

A single flat is one of our smaller jobs. The price depends on the pest and how bad it is, and treating a whole block brings the cost per unit down. Our price guide gives a starting point.

Are your sprays safe for my children?

Yes, when used as directed. Treatments are odourless and non-staining; keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry, and rodent bait stays inside locked stations.

Why do cockroaches keep coming back after I spray?

Because spray kills only the ones it touches. The rest stay hidden in wall voids and appliance motors, or come in from the next unit. Gel bait that cockroaches carry back to their hiding places works much better.

Do you remove bee swarms?

Where possible we refer bee swarms to a beekeeper or work with one so the bees can be moved. Wasp nests we remove ourselves.

Can my restaurant get a monitoring contract?

Yes. We schedule regular visits, place lockable stations, treat the kitchen and storerooms and leave a service record each time for your inspections.
